A Great Non-profit to Volunteer with – Cinderella’s Closet
It is not about simply giving away gowns. Actually, Cinderella’s Closet would profess that prom gowns are the least important part of their organization. “We are about making girls feel loved, special, important, and worthy from the moment they walk in our doors,” says, Erin Peterson, founder of Cinderella’s Closet.
Born out of Erin’s unique shopping experience where she purchased a dress for a girl she didn’t even know, the vision of Cinderella’s Closet is to help girls “look and feel just like Cinderella” by providing “Fairy Godmothers” who transform prom night for girls who otherwise could not attend the prom because they cannot afford to purchase their own dresses.
High school junior and senior girls are referred to Cinderella’s Closet by their schools. Little do they know what they are in for — the princess treatment includes not only a gown, but shoes, accessories, goodies, and 2-hours of shopping bliss — without lifting a finger for anything. Fairy Godmothers invest one day to be a personal shopping consultant, completing the experience. “Not only did the experience lift my spirits but it lifted a huge weight off of my shoulders. Not only was I worried about not being able to go to my Senior Prom, I was also worried about my mom because she had been sick… at the time Prom just wasn’t in the cards for us and if it weren’t for your organization I wouldn’t have been able to go.”
Cinderella’s Closet is making dreams come true! For one weekend a year, their doors are opened to bring joy, love and make miracles happen for girls in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area, as well as across the nation. Having expanded to encompass 7 other states, Erin’s mission to touch girls through gowns and show them love like they have never known is spreading.
Centennial, Inc. admires and applauds the transformation that Cinderella’s Closet is leading in our community by reaching thousands of girls who may not always be at the forefront of many minds at prom time in terms of popularity or economics. We encourage you to be a part of this organization as a volunteer Fairy Godmother, or through donations of gently worn gowns, shoes and new jewelry — or go big and help run your very own dress drive! Every girl deserves to be treated with respect, to feel loved and to know that her worth is outside the circumstances of her life. Cinderella’s Closet is truly changing girls lives and making their dreams come true – by turning dresses into dreams.
